Each region of Tibet has its own unique style of singing. Khampas sing "kglu" and "bha-shae". Western Tibetan songs are called "toe shae". The songs from Kongpo are known as "kong shae". The strong dialect of Amdo (north-eastern Tibet) influences both the sound and rhythm of their songs. Tibetan opera ("namther") is a distinct category with its own unique style of singing. The Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959 led to another style of singing in an attempt to deliberately sinicise Tibetan culture and tradition. There are many new songs that are Chinese except that the words are sung in Tibetan. Old songs are also given the Chinese touch. They even change the words of these old songs substituting them with communist party songs or praises! For more information on Tibetan songs and musical tradition, please contact the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), in Dharamsala. This institution was founded by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Goverment in exile. Its main purpose is to preserve the culture that the Chinese attempted to utterly destroy.
